Adult Autism Assessment Wales: Private, Online & Face-to-Face Options

Adults across Wales consider an autism assessment for many different reasons. Some want to better understand longstanding differences involving communication, social interaction, sensory experiences, routines or day-to-day life. Others begin thinking about it after a family member is assessed, after reading about autism, or following a conversation with a health professional.

Recognising yourself in descriptions of autism does not, on its own, show that somebody is autistic. Similar experiences can have several explanations, and a formal diagnosis can only follow an appropriate assessment carried out by a suitably qualified professional.

Adults in Wales may explore an NHS assessment route or arrange a private assessment with an independent provider. Autism Support Wales does not carry out assessments or diagnose autism. Our role is to help you understand the options available and compare relevant providers using the information those providers have supplied, so you can ask the right questions before deciding what to do next.

How do adults get assessed for autism in Wales?

There are two broad routes. An NHS assessment usually begins by speaking to a GP or another health professional, who can explain the local pathway and what a referral involves. Arrangements differ between health boards in Wales, so the process is not identical everywhere.

Alternatively, adults may arrange a private assessment with an independent provider. Some private services accept self-referrals; others have their own referral or information requirements. Comparing several providers is usually the clearest way to understand what each route would involve for you.

What happens during an adult autism assessment?

The exact process varies between providers. Depending on the service, an assessment may include a developmental history covering childhood and later life, a discussion of current experiences across different settings, questionnaires or structured assessment approaches, and — where appropriate and available — information from somebody who knew you during childhood.

No single method is required by every service, and not all providers use the same tools or number of appointments. Ask the provider to explain their process before booking.

Private adult autism assessments

Some adults explore private assessment because of the timing, the assessment format available, or simply to understand all of their options. If you are considering a private service, our guide to private autism assessments in Wales explains how to compare providers. It is worth checking:

  • The professional qualifications of the assessing clinician or team
  • Exactly what the assessment includes
  • Whether a written diagnostic report is included
  • How feedback is given after the assessment
  • What post-diagnostic support, if any, is available
  • The total price and any additional charges
  • The expected waiting time

Online vs face-to-face adult autism assessment

Face-to-face assessment takes place in person at a clinic or other venue. Online or partly remote assessment uses video or telephone appointments for some or all of the process. Some providers use a mixed approach, combining remote appointments with parts that happen in person.

Each format may suit different circumstances — travel, sensory comfort, or the type of information a provider needs to gather. Read more about online autism assessments in Wales, and confirm the format directly with any provider you approach.

How much does an adult autism assessment cost?

Private assessment prices vary according to the provider and what the assessment includes — for example the number of appointments, whether a written diagnostic report is provided, and whether feedback or follow-up is part of the fee.

Any prices shown on this page come directly from provider records, and starting prices appear only where a provider has supplied one. Our assessment costs guide explains what to look for when comparing fees.

What happens after an autism diagnosis?

Support needs vary considerably between individuals. Some adults find that understanding themselves differently is the most valuable outcome, while others look for practical support at work, in education, or with health and daily living.

Our guide to support after an autism diagnosis covers the options in more detail.
