Private Autism Assessment Costs in Wales
What affects the price of a private autism assessment, what a fee may or may not include, and the questions worth asking before you pay.
Introduction
The cost of a private autism assessment in Wales varies from provider to provider. It depends on the age of the person being assessed, the professionals involved, how the assessment is carried out and what the package includes.
Prices can change, and providers set their own fees and terms. Any figure you read online — including anything shown on this site — should be treated as a guide only and confirmed directly with the provider before booking.
Autism Support Wales is an independent information and directory service. We do not carry out autism assessments, we do not set provider prices and we cannot guarantee any price or quote.
How much does a private autism assessment cost?
Across the published providers in our directory that state a starting price, those starting prices currently range from £875 to £2,495.
Published starting prices
£875 – £2,495
Based on 34 published starting prices from providers listed in our directory.
This is a range of published starting prices only. It does not mean that every assessment falls within this range, that these are the prices you will be quoted, or that any two packages are comparable. Some providers do not publish a price at all, some quote after an initial discussion, and additional charges may apply. Always confirm the total expected cost with the provider before booking.
Why do autism assessment costs vary?
Pricing may be affected by:
- Whether the assessment is for an adult, a child or a young person
- The number and type of professionals involved
- The number and length of appointments
- The assessment tools and approach used
- Whether information is gathered from family members or schools
- Whether appointments are online, face-to-face or a combination
- The level of detail in the written report
- Whether a feedback appointment is included
- Whether any post-assessment support is included
A higher price does not necessarily mean a better assessment, and a lower price does not necessarily mean a worse one. What matters is who is carrying out the assessment, how thorough the process is, and whether the package meets your needs.
What might the assessment fee include?
Packages differ between providers, and a fee may include:
- An initial consultation or screening discussion
- Questionnaires and background information
- Developmental history
- Assessment appointments or structured activities
- Review by one or more professionals
- A feedback or outcome appointment
- A written diagnostic report
- Recommendations or signposting
- Limited post-assessment support
None of this is standard across providers. Ask for written confirmation of exactly what is included in the fee, and what is not, before you pay anything.
Possible additional costs
Some services may charge separately for:
- Initial consultations or screening
- Additional appointments
- School observations or information gathering
- Travel or clinic-related costs
- Additional or amended reports
- Letters for education, employment or other organisations
- Follow-up appointments
- Cancellation or rearrangement fees
These charges will not apply to every provider. Some include most or all of the above in a single fee, so it is worth asking specifically.
Adult and child assessment costs
Adult and child assessment processes can differ — for example in which professionals are involved, whether information is gathered from family members or a school, and how many appointments are needed. As a result, adult and child prices are not always comparable, and two similar-looking fees can cover quite different processes.
Compare what each package actually includes rather than the headline figure alone. For more on the adult route, see our guide to adult autism assessment in Wales. You can also filter our provider directory by the age of the person being assessed.
Online and face-to-face assessment costs
Online assessments are not automatically cheaper, and face-to-face assessments are not automatically more comprehensive. Some providers charge the same regardless of format, and others structure their process differently.
The professional team involved and the assessment process itself matter more than appointment format alone. To understand how remote assessment works in practice, see our guide to online autism assessments.
Paying for a private autism assessment
Payment arrangements differ between providers. Some require full payment in advance, some take a deposit to secure an appointment, and some offer instalment plans. Instalments and finance are not available everywhere, so do not assume they are an option.
Before paying, check:
- When payment is due
- Whether any deposit is refundable
- Whether instalments are available
- Whether any finance option involves credit
- Cancellation and refund terms
- Whether additional appointments could incur further charges
Get the payment terms in writing. If a finance option involves credit, make sure you understand who the credit agreement is with and what it costs in total.
NHS versus private assessment costs
An NHS autism assessment does not normally require the person being assessed to pay privately for the assessment itself. However, referral routes, eligibility and waiting times vary by age, individual circumstances and local health board.
Choosing a private assessment means you can compare providers and their processes, but you pay the provider's fee. Paying privately does not guarantee a diagnosis, does not guarantee how quickly an assessment will be completed, and does not guarantee that any particular organisation will accept the outcome.
For an overview of both routes, see our guide to getting an autism assessment in Wales.
Questions to ask before paying
Taking this list to an initial conversation makes it much easier to compare providers fairly.
- What is the total expected price?
- What is included in the quoted fee?
- Could any additional charges apply?
- Who will complete the assessment?
- What qualifications and professional registrations do they hold?
- How many appointments are included?
- Will I receive a written report?
- Is a feedback appointment included?
- Is post-assessment support included?
- What are the cancellation and refund terms?
- Are deposits or instalment payments available?
- When is the final payment due?
