Autism Assessment Waiting Times in Wales

NHS autism assessment waiting times in Wales vary considerably depending on age, location and local health board. Although there is a national waiting-time standard for children’s neurodevelopmental assessments, many children and adults currently wait considerably longer for assessment.

Private autism assessment providers may be able to offer appointments sooner, with waiting times varying between providers.

Waiting times at a glance

NHS children

Wales has a 26-week national waiting-time standard for children’s neurodevelopmental assessment, although actual waits can be considerably longer.

NHS adults

Adult waiting times vary significantly by health board and, in some services, published information has described waits extending into years.

Private providers

Waiting times vary by provider. Some providers in the Autism Support Wales directory currently state that assessments can begin within weeks.

NHS and private waiting times are not directly equivalent measurements: they are recorded differently and may cover different stages of an assessment pathway.

NHS Autism Assessment Waiting Times in Wales

There is no single NHS autism assessment waiting time that applies to everybody in Wales. Assessment is arranged locally, so how long somebody waits depends a great deal on which service they are referred to and which pathway is appropriate for them.

Waiting times can vary according to:

  • The health board and local service involved
  • Whether the assessment is on an adult or children’s pathway
  • Local demand and referral volumes
  • Service and clinician capacity
  • Whether a multidisciplinary assessment is required
  • The complexity of an individual presentation
  • How much background information is already available
  • Which stage of the pathway a published figure is measuring

Published waiting-time statistics can also measure different stages of the pathway — for example a wait to triage rather than a wait to a full assessment — so figures from different sources should be interpreted carefully and are not always comparable.

Children’s Autism Assessment Waiting Times in Wales

Children and young people in Wales are generally assessed through neurodevelopmental pathways, which may consider autism alongside other neurodevelopmental differences rather than assessing autism in isolation.

Wales has a 26-week waiting-time standard for children’s neurodevelopmental assessment. This is a standard that services are working towards, not a guarantee that an individual assessment will happen within 26 weeks, and many children currently wait considerably longer than this.

Welsh Government information indicates that health boards have been working to reduce the longest neurodevelopmental waits, including efforts to eliminate waits exceeding three years, but significant waits remain in a number of areas. Waits are not the same for every child, and any figure quoted for one health board should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

Adult Autism Assessment Waiting Times in Wales

Adult autism assessment waiting times vary significantly between Welsh health boards. There is not one universal national adult waiting time, and the examples below are published figures from particular services at particular points in time rather than a measure that applies across Wales.

Hywel Dda University Health Board

Published information reported in January 2025 that approximately 2,001 adults were waiting for an autism assessment, and estimated that somebody newly joining the list could face a wait of approximately five years. This was a published estimate at that point in time and is not a guaranteed current waiting time.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board

Published service information has stated that adults who progress from triage to a full autism assessment may face waits of up to approximately three years. Waiting times change, and this relates to published service information rather than a universal Welsh figure.

NHS waiting times change regularly and vary by health board. Figures and examples on this page are based on published information available at the time of review and should not be treated as a guaranteed current waiting time.

Compare Private Autism Assessment Waiting Times

Private autism assessment waiting times vary between providers. The comparison below uses information held in the Autism Support Wales provider directory to help you compare typical waiting times alongside other important assessment information.

Waiting times are based on information supplied or published by providers and can change according to availability. A stated waiting time may refer to the time until assessment begins rather than the time until the entire diagnostic process is completed. Confirm current availability when making an enquiry.

NHS vs Private Autism Assessment Waiting Times

Neither route is automatically better. They work differently, and which one suits somebody depends on their circumstances, priorities and finances.

NHS assessment

  • No private assessment fee
  • Waiting times vary considerably between services
  • Local referral pathways apply
  • Pathways and availability differ between health boards

Private assessment

  • May provide faster access to assessment
  • Assessment fees apply
  • Different providers assess different age groups
  • Online, face-to-face and hybrid options may be available
  • Prices and waiting times vary between providers
  • Check exactly what is included in the assessment and report

What Does an Autism Assessment Waiting Time Mean?

Different organisations measure waiting time in different ways. A published or quoted waiting time may refer to:

  • Referral to triage or screening
  • Triage to a first appointment
  • Booking to the first assessment appointment
  • First appointment to a diagnostic outcome
  • The beginning to the completion of the whole diagnostic pathway

This is one reason NHS and private waiting-time figures should not always be compared directly. When you enquire, it is worth asking exactly what a stated waiting time covers.

Why Do Autism Assessment Waiting Times Vary?

Assessment is not a single fixed appointment, so several things affect how long it takes to arrange and complete: overall demand, clinician availability and service capacity, and whether a multidisciplinary team needs to be involved.

Adult and children’s pathways also differ. A children’s assessment often needs information from parents or carers and from the school or setting, while an adult assessment may involve gathering developmental history. Where a presentation is more complex, or where further information is needed, the process can take longer.

What Can I Do While Waiting for an Autism Assessment?

Waiting can be difficult, and there are practical things that many people find useful. This is general information rather than individual advice.

  • Keep referral letters, reports and correspondence together in one place
  • Record specific examples of difficulties, strengths and support needs
  • Gather relevant developmental information where that is appropriate and available
  • Speak to the school or education setting where a child or young person is involved
  • Discuss current support needs with the professionals already involved
  • Use autism-informed support and resources where you find them helpful

Can You Get Support Without an Autism Diagnosis?

Some support can be based on identified needs rather than requiring somebody to already have a formal autism diagnosis. For children and young people in Wales, additional learning needs can be identified and supported based on the learner’s needs, so it is often worth discussing current support with the school or setting rather than waiting for an assessment outcome.

This does not mean every service or form of support is available without a diagnosis. Some specific services, adjustments or entitlements do require a formal diagnosis, so it is sensible to ask each service what they need.
